Welcome to the home page of Barnstaple Croquet Club

Croquet is a game that can be played and enjoyed by people of any age. At our club we mainly play golf croquet, which is a game of skill and tactics. The basics are quick to learn although players will find they are constantly improving as they play. Men and women play and compete on equal terms. Our club is a small friendly club and as such you do not have to book time on the lawns or come with others to play as everyone there is quite happy to play each other.

We are based in the Barnstaple and Pilton Cricket club ground off Raleigh Meadow in Barnstaple, a map and directions are given on the “location” link on the left of this page.

We have 3 full sized lawns and are in the process of developing a small lawn to practice on. We provide all of the equipment needed to play and will offer coaching if you would like it. The only requirements of dress are that you wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes or trainers to avoid damage to the lawns.

Our club days are Monday and Thursday from 10.30 a.m. and usually end around 3 p.m. Players do not need to come for the entire session but can come at any time during the day and leave when they wish. We also play on Wednesday evenings from 5.30 until 7 or 7.30 depending upon when it gets too dark to play, this is mainly for people who work during the day. Our outdoor season starts at the beginning of April and finishes at the end of September. During October to March we play once a week on Friday from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at the indoor bowls area in North Devon Leisure Centre.

Croquet is the most well kept secret among sports, mainly because it is a sport to be played rather than watched. It is not only good exercise for the body and the brain but is a chance to relax and socialise in a friendly group in beautiful surroundings and at the same time learn new skills. If you would like to see some game play please click on the “golf croquet” link on the left of this page which not only explains the outline of the game but has some videos of the game being played.

If you would like to come along and try it out then please come along at the times given above and we will make you welcome. Many of our members did just that and now wish they had started playing long ago.

If you have other questions or would like to come along then please contact us using the “contact us” link on the left of this page.
